An old mine

Before being a nature reserve, the lake of Arjuzanx was a source of brown coal.

This deposit was used to feed the boilers of a nearby thermal power station. Major work was carried out to reach the rock layer.

For nearly 30 years, the Arjuzanx site allowed EDF to exploit its resource, the largest in France.

 

Its renovation as a natural area

Subsequently, the site was rehabilitated to fill the main quarry with water. The lake of Arjuzanx was thus created and allowed the protection of the biodiversity of the area.

Indeed, many species take refuge in the lake of Arjuzanx, such as the Common Crane: this beautiful and large bird stops on this nature reserve which is located in the heart of its migration corridor, around the months of November and February.

It is during these months that the curious and birdwatching enthusiasts come to observe these majestic birds. Guided tours are organised by the reserve to discover the cranes while respecting their natural habitat.

Around the old mine, you will also find a park of more than 2500 hectares, with 7 surrounding lakes.

Today, the Arjuzanx lake has become the largest lake in the Landes and part of the site has been classified as a national nature reserve since 2022.
